Athlete’s foot: a common problem
Athlete’s foot (officially: tinea pedis) is a skin infection caused by fungi (dermatophytes) that affects the horny layer of the epidermis. The inflammatory reaction resulting from this creates a skin disorder. Athlete’s foot is highly contagious and is quite common; at least 10% of the population is affected, and up to 20% of all adults, while the percentage is even higher in the elderly, as well as diabetic and rheumatic patients.
What are the symptoms
Four types of abnormalities can result from a fungal infection on the feet, which may or may not occur in combination.
- Whitish scaling between the toes, sometimes with painful fissures. Especially the area between the 4th and 5th toe is often affected. A popular name for this infection is “toe cheese,” because of the smell that sometimes accompanies it when bacteria are also present.
- Itchy blisters, especially on the soles of the feet, which later dry into brown spots or scabs, after which the skin flakes off. Occasionally larger blisters develop and the skin may become wet.
- Redness and scaling of large areas of the soles and edges of the feet.
- Yellow discoloration and crumbling of the nails (fungal or chalky nails).
What you can do yourself
- Do not share the towel with anyone else.
- Wear bath slippers in showers and locker rooms, in saunas and around swimming pools.
- Be moderate in the use of soap and shower foam.
- Always dry feet thoroughly after washing, especially between the toes, and always use and clean, dry towel.
- Wear clean cotton or wool socks every day.
- Wear shoes made of natural materials (leather). These “breathe” better and provide better ventilation around the feet.
