Recognizing fungal nails. How do you do this and what can you do to get rid of them? A fungal nail is caused by a fungal infection in the nail. In the Netherlands, the term “fungal nail” is used alongside the term “chalky nail,” whether rightly or wrongly.
Recognizing fungal nails
As mentioned, fungi are the cause of a fungal nail infection. However, this does not mean that there are only harmful fungi. Most fungi are harmless. Problems only arise when a fungus penetrates the skin or nails and causes an infection. You can often recognize this infection by a white or yellow spot on the nail, one that can subsequently spread and make the nail thicker, more brittle, and crumbly. You may even experience pain in the nail or toe.
Prevent contamination
As soon as you notice fungal nails, your first step is to prevent further spread or infection. After all, athlete’s foot is highly contagious. Do not share your towel or nail clippers with others (anymore), and wear flip-flops if you go to the swimming pool or shower after exercising. Always dry your feet thoroughly after washing, especially between the toes, and always use a clean, dry towel. Wear clean cotton or wool socks every day. Wear shoes made of natural materials (leather). These ‘breathe’ better and provide better ventilation around the feet.
Effectively combat athlete’s foot
Intensive Foot Bath® is highly effective against athlete’s foot and fungal nails. This foot bath should be combined with Nagel Drops® and Intensive Foot Cream® to restore beautiful, healthy feet and nails. If you suffer from sweaty feet in addition to fungal nails, Shoe Deo® will help.
Naturally, a healthy lifestyle is the primary concern in preventing athlete’s foot. This means eating healthy every day, getting enough exercise, drinking enough water, not smoking, and not drinking alcohol. Also read: Tasty food, healthy feet (with a recipe for spicy fish soup with tomato).
Can you reduce the risk of a fungal nail infection?
The answer is yes, if you work on a healthy immune system every day. That means having a healthy lifestyle, as described above. Additionally, you can do a lot yourself to keep your feet and nails healthy by taking good care of them and taking precautions to avoid contact with contagious athlete’s foot, as described above.
